students to attend, but the head of the Neighborhood Council believes that
things have changed and that we can have a good showing. I think so too.”

COLUMN: The Government Relations Council to Lobby at Utah’s
State Capitol
USU/SA View
By Melanie Duffy
Government Relations Council PR director
This February, the Government Relations Council is
representing the students of Utah State University at Utah’s State Capitol.
Members of the GRC will meet with state senators and legislators to lobby on
behalf of the university to gain continuing support for school initiatives.
The GRC plays an important role at the Capitol by showing
the representatives and senators actual faces of the individuals they are
making the decisions for. We are able to spend time with them to discuss what
an important role Utah State is playing in our lives as well as its overall
state contribution.
Not only is the GRC giving a face to the students of the
university, we are also able to create and maintain relationships between the university
and the lawmakers of the state. GRC members are able to talk face to face with
lawmakers and tell them about the great things happening at Utah State. Members of the GRC are facilitating discussions
about the success of the Alumni Legacy Waver as well as the Vet Program – both
of which were carried out with the support of the state.
As a Land Grant University, we rely on funding from the
state to help progress and grow. This Legislative Session, USU is asking the
state for money for new buildings for both the Brigham City and USU Eastern
location in Price. Utah State is also asking for $1.5 million in ongoing
funding to support programs to increase the quality and quantity of new
graduate students. The GRC, along with President Stan Albrecht and Utah State’s
lobbyist, Neil Abercrombie, will talk with the senators and representatives to
discuss the importance of these initiatives.
The senators and representatives favorite day is Aggie Ice
Cream Day, which will be happening on February 21st. On this day
GRC, along with members of USU/SA, will bring 800 cups of the famous Aggie Ice
Cream to the Capitol. Our Aggie Ice Cream booth is so popular at the Capitol
that we kind of get a taste of what rock stars must feel like every day. We are glad we can share this delicious tradition of
Utah State with the people at the capitol.
The GRC is excited to be a part of the 2014 Legislative
Session. Along with speaking with members of Utah’s state government, GRC
members are going to take tours of the capitol, go on the house floor, have one
on one time with Stan Albrecht and Neil Abercrombie, and participate in the
Higher Ed Appropriations Committee. It is a learning experience that we are
honored to be a part of.

Poetry: This is a poem that I wrote for one of my poetry classes. It was workshopped in my class and was well received with my classmates and professor.
5th Grade
We all have one: that fifth
grade photo,
from which Mr. Holstad is
wearing his
button down Hawaiian shirt,
and
missed a button over his big
belly.
My classmate Ross is on the
front row,
second from the right,
wearing cargo pants
and a power rangers t-shirt,
smiling that big toothy grin
and rocking the bowl cut.
I remember him always
sitting on the ground,
his legs inside out, in
complete comfort.
I remember how kind he was,
and how strange.
He would play by himself at
recess, but never failed to smile.
I remember passing by him sitting
in a desk in the hall,
getting extra tutoring from
Mr. Holstad, who cared so much.
I remember the shame in his
eyes as they met mine,
and feeling so sorry for
him, knowing that at recess that day
the boys playing basketball
refused to let him play,
and called him stupid as he
walked away
just loud enough so everyone
could hear.
I wonder if he still sits
with his legs inside out.
I wonder if he ever learned
to play the guitar, or is the lead singer in a band.
I wonder who gave him his
first kiss.
I wonder if he ever got over
being called stupid in the fifth grade.
